Vinous (Nov. 2025) Review of 2023 Rive Droite Paradise Hills Vineyard

“The 2023 Rive Droite Paradise Hills Vineyard is fabulous! Brisk and finely cut, the 2023 impresses with its energy and exceptional balance. Crushed flowers, cedar, pipe tobacco, menthol, and dried herbs all soar out of the glass. Beams of supporting tannin give this svelte, classy Merlot-based a vertical built. I especially admire the energy and tension here. This is an especially fine Rive Droite. Give it a few years to soften”.

The Wine Palate (Jan. 2026) Review of 2023 Mythicvs Cabernet Sauvignon

“The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Mythicvs is made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep garnet-purple colored. Swirling in the glass is needed to coax out vibrant, pure notes of ripe blackberries, cassis, and plum preserves, followed by hints of wet slate, bay leaf, lavender oil, and cedar. The full-bodied palate is stacked with densely packed black fruit and savory layers, supported by very firm, ripe tannins and beautifully knit freshness. Finishing with epic length and depth.”

“The flagship of this estate and a top barrel selection of the 2023, Cabernet Sauvignon Mythicvs, is made only in top years. The 2023 is all varietal and spent 18 months in 100% new Taransaud T5 barrels. With a saturated purple hue, it offers sweet currants and smoked tobacco, blueberries, liquid violet, and pen ink nuances. It is full-bodied, has an incredibly pure, seamless mouthfeel, ultra-fine yet certainly present tannins, plenty of mid-palate depth, and a great finish. It is another heavenly, incredibly pure, classy Cabernet Sauvignon from this estate, with so much to love. Hide bottles for 4-5 years, then enjoy over the next 2-3 decades”.

Vinous (Nov. 2025) Review of Mythicus 2023, Paradise Hills Vineyard

“The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Mythicvs, Paradise Hills Vineyard marries power with finesse. It’s a rich, potent wine, stylistically far more concentrated than the other top wines in this range. Blackberry, chocolate, mocha, dried herbs, graphite, and incense stain the palate. Readers who enjoy more finessed Cabernets may prefer the Proprietary Red, as Mythicvs is quite the powerhouse in 2023. Incisive, muscular tannins wrap it all together. Time in the glass brings out the wine’s sensual aromatics, but don’t be fooled, this needs time”.

Wine Advocate review of 2023 Blankiet Estate Rive Droite

“Composed almost entirely of Merlot (96.9% plus 3.1% Cabernet Franc), Blankiet’s 2023 Rive Droite Paradise Hills Vineyard is a stunning example of this finicky variety. Mixed red and black cherries join with dusty earth on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is round and plush, yet somehow also fresh and structured–the sort of oxymoronic juxtaposition that marks so many of the world’s best wines. Long and softly tannic, it finished with great suppleness and elegance”.

Tasting at Blankiet with winemaker Graeme MacDonald, who joined the team in 2016, revealed a heart-stopping collection of 2023s. From their small vineyard situated west of (behind) Dominus Estate and up into the lower slopes of the Mayacamas, the team at Blankiet deserves
immense credit.

“When you get vintages where the curtain doesn’t close on you, you get to implement all your vision and philosophy,” said MacDonald. “What ’23 brings to the table is exactly what I like to drink — and to have the owner pushing you to take risks is unique.”

Grapes Variety: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon
Drinking window: 2024 – 2039

Blankiet was among the highlights in my tastings of the 2014s. The wines have aged impeccably and are in a sweet spot today to offer maximum pleasure. It’s always a bit difficult to taste wines from this era, as the 2014s were made by Denis and May-Britt Malbec for proprietors Claude and Katherine Blankiet before Denis’ passing in an automotive accident. The wines will remain a brilliant testament to what the Malbecs achieved at Blankiet. The Cabernet Sauvignon Mythicvs is so impressive.

‘The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Mythicvs Paradise Hills Vineyard is fabulous. A wine of precision and tension, it impresses with its freshness, vibrancy and sheer beauty. Bright acids cut through a core of red-toned fruit, blood orange, mint, spice, and rose petals. Its balance and poise are simply exquisite. This is, without question, one of the wines of the year. Mythicvs is among the 2014s that have awakened following a long slumber after bottling. What a wine!

Wine Advocate review of 2022 Blankiet Estate Rive Droite

Drink 2025 – 2040

Almost entirely Merlot (there is 1.5% Cabernet Franc), the 2022 Rive Droite Paradise Hills Vineyard features scents of ripe cherries and raspberries accented by gentle baking spices. It is full-bodied and supple, intense, but not at all overweight, with a long, fresh finish. Impressive!

Owner Claude Blankiet presaged our tasting of the 2022 by saying, “Heat is always the enemy of wine. We experienced this 20 years ago, trying to dry farm our vineyard and during a heat spike in September, our grapes shriveled in three days. We started experimenting with shade cloth in 2004 and now we have 75,000 linear feet protecting the fruiting zone, in addition we use tiny water misters that lowers the temperature by 10 degrees around the clusters. We used both systems in 2022 – It saved us.” While neighboring Dominus is not bottling any 2022, said Blankiet, “For us, our wines kept their freshness. “Using the shade cloth as louvers – lowering and raising them – you can mitigate the excess of solar radiation without slowing ripening.” “Blankiet said that some people opted to harvest early – the end of August or early September. “But here, when we tasted, the fruit wasn’t ripe,” he said.

Winemaking consultant Graeme MacDonald, who began working with Blankiet in 2016, does a reasonably large saignée –about 20% — which goes toward the estate rosé, but he isn’t dogmatic about avoiding water additions. “The goal is always to pick perfectly, he said. “I don’t like acid adjustments because I think you can taste them later.” He also limits yeast nutrient additions to induce reduction. “If you get the pick decision right, you can avoid many of the adjustments,” he said. “I like being hands-off. I want to be the invisible winemaker if I can.” That said, MacDonald isn’t shy about discussing what he does do. “Since I have been here, the goal has been to bring out more tannin and structure. We do big saignées and 40 to 50 days macerations.”

The fruit is chilled to 24° F to improve destemming, and there is a long cold soak (seven days or more), at the end of which he adds a ‘pied de cuve’ (native wild yeasts starter). A warm initial fermentation stage (above 90 degrees Fahrenheit), which he then backs off as alcohol levels rise, followed by an extended maceration under closed lids without further pump-overs (with temperatures as low as 65 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit).

“There is bitter chocolate that starts to come out, and that’s when you know you are done,” said MacDonald. “I like reduction because that’s how you get the graphite, the minerality to come out.”

During aging, he will do barrel swaps to avoid “over-seasoning”. Any particular lot is racked as needed and he slowly build the blends over the entire course of the élevage. By his own admission, he often has last-minute changes, like adding another gallon of Petit Verdot into the blending tank.

“Wine is man and technique, science and nature” said Blankiet. “That’s the magic of wine.”

“If you get the picking decision right, you can avoid many of the adjustments,” he said. “I like being hands-off. I want to be the invisible winemaker if I can.” That said, MacDonald isn’t shy about discussing what he does do. “Since I have been here, the goal has been to bring out more tannin and structure. We do big saignées and 40 to 50 days macerations.”

The fruit is chilled to 24 degrees Fahrenheit to help with destemming , and there is a long cold soak (seven days or more), at the end of which he adds a ‘pied de cuve’ (native wild yeasts starter).

The Wine Independent (July 2024) Review of Blankiet Estate, Paradise Hills Vineyard, 2021 Mythicvs

The 2021 Paradise Hills Vineyard Mythicvs, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, is a barrel selection of the more powerful, concentrated lots, usually from the same 3 or 4 blocks. Deep garnet-purple in color, it needs a little swirling to conjure up notions of creme de cassis, blueberry pie, mulberries, and dark chocolate plus touches of garrigue, iron ore, and dusty soil. The full-bodied palate is bursting with concentrated juicy black fruits supported by firm yet wonderfully velvety tannins and well-knit freshness, finishing very long and pure.

The Wine Independent (July 2024) Review of Blankiet Estate 2021 Rive Droite, Paradise Hills Vineyard

The 2021 Rive Droite, 95.6% Merlot and 4.4% Cabernet Franc, is deep garnet-purple in color. It pops from the glass with vivacious notes of black cherries, mulberries, and fresh plums plus nuances of candied violets, cardamom, pencil shavings, and aniseed with a hint of Sichuan pepper. The full-bodied palate is so, so satiny, with a refreshing backbone and bright, shiny black fruit layers, finishing on a lingering spicy note.

The Wine Independent (July 2024) Review of Blankiet Estate, Paradise Hills Vineyard, 2021 Proprietary Red

The 2021 Paradise Hills Vineyard Proprietary Red is a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8.8% Merlot, 2.9% Cabernet Franc, and 2.3% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple in color, it charges out of the glass with pure notes of crushed blackcurrants, boysenberries, and wild blueberries leading to a compelling undercurrent of lavender, tapenade, and Darjeeling tea with hints of crushed rocks. The medium to full-bodied palate shimmers with energetic black and blue fruits framed by very fine-grained tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and savory.

The Wine Independent (July 2024) Review of 2021 Prince of Hearts, Paradise Hills Vineyard

The 2021 Prince of Hearts is composed of 47.3% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40.1% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 3.6% Petit Verdot. This is the second wine of the estate. The amount of Merlot has slightly increased over the last few years, making it a distinctive wine. Deep garnet-purple in color, it springs from the glass with bright, cheery notes of Morello cherries, juicy blackberries, and fresh plums followed by hints of redcurrant jelly, cinnamon stick, and rosebud tea. The full-bodied palate is juicy and plush, with bags of red and black berry layers and a lively line lifting the fragrant finish.

Vinous (May 2024) Review of 2013 Proprietary Red, Paradise Hills Vineyard

The 2013 Proprietary Red, Paradise Hills Vineyard is just beginning to enter its first plateau of maturity. Tobacco, cedar, dried herbs, mocha and hints of French oak all grace this super-expressive offering. Savory and dark, with tons of nuance, the 2013 is exquisitely beautiful. It shows the finessed style that is such a signature here today, but with just a bit more concentration the warm, drought year provided.

Vinous (May 2024) Review of Mythicus 2013, Paradise Hills Vineyard

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Mythicvs, Paradise Hills Vineyard, here in its second-ever vintage, is superb. Black cherry, plum, chocolate, leather, tobacco and incense are all nicely amplified. All the elements are so well balanced that the 2013 can be enjoyed now with a healthy decant or cellared for another decade.

Vinous (May 2024) Review of 2012 Rive Droite, Paradise Hills Vineyard

Drinking window: 2022 – 2037

The 2012 Rive Droite Paradise Hills Vineyard is classy and elegant, with the soft contours of Merlot driving the the overall feel. A wine of nearly indescribable finesse, the 2012 is simply exquisite. Silky, aromatic and utterly brilliant, the 2012 possesses terrific energy and vibrancy to match its understated, mid-weight personality. The 2012 is still quite fresh. Readers lucky enough to own it can look forward to another decade of exceptional drinking. Today the 2012 is quite delicate, almost Pinot like, in its nobility.

— Antonio Galloni, May 2024

Deep layers of spices, black cherries, plums, menthol and licorice meld together in the 2012 Rive Droite Paradise Hills Vineyard. Rich, layered and deeply resonant, the 2012 impresses for its voluptuous, sexy personality. Mocha, espresso and grilled herbs all flow through to the finish. Cabernet Franc plays just a minor role in the blend, but its personality comes through loud and clear, especially in the aromatics. The 2012 is 96% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc. This is a fabulous showing from Blankiet. (95-97+ pts)

Producer commentary

Claude and Katherine Blankiet spared no expense in making the best 2011s possible, and the results bear that out. Among the 2011s, I can’t ignore the entry – level Prince of Hearts, which is one of the best Napa Valley wines in its price range. Overall, the 2011s are delicate, perfumed and impeccably balanced. The 2012s are also fabulous Blankiet fans will note a new wine, the 100% Cabernet Sauvignon Mythicus, which may become a permanent addition. I also had a chance to taste a few 2013s from tank. The transformation that has taken place at Blankiet over the last few years under the direction of Denis and May – Britt Malbec is remarkable.

Vinous (May 2024) Review of 2012 Proprietary Red, Paradise Hills Vineyard

Antonio Galloni. Vinous. Tasting date: May 2024

The 2012 Proprietary Red, Paradise Hills Vineyard is another stellar wine in this range from Claude and Katherine Blankiet. Dark and so expressive, the 2012 jumps from the glass with dark red cherry fruit, new leather, spice, tobacco and incense. Here, too, the Proprietary Red is so fresh and vibrant. More than anything else, the 2012 is a wine of grace and finesse. It finishes with tremendous resonance and power, showing the best the vintage had to offer.

Antonio Galloni. Tasting date: October 2014

Blankiet’s 2012 Proprietary Red Paradise Hills Vineyard races across the palate with super-expressive red fruit, smoke, licorice, spices and menthol. Here, too, it is the wine’s textural silkiness and overall polish that stand out above all else. This radiant, striking Cabernet Sauvignon-based red will drink well to age twenty, perhaps beyond.

Antonio Galloni. Tasting date: October 2015

Blankiet’s 2012 Proprietary Red Paradise Hills Vineyard is just starting to open up. The 2012 is delicate and totally sublime. Expressive Cabernet Sauvignon aromatics open up first, followed by layers of expressive red-fleshed fruit. Light on its feet and exceptionally polished throughout, the 2012 delivers the goods, big time. In 2012, the Proprietary Red speaks to finesse above all else. This is the most impressive of Blankiet’s 2012s today.

Blankiet has come a long way over the last few years. Increased focus on the dual flagships Rive Droite and Proprietary Red fueled by Claude and Katherine Blankiet’s relentless pursuit of excellence has resulted in more severe selection, lower production and higher overall quality. One of the secondary results of that is a marked increase in quality of Blankiet’s second wine, Prince of Hearts, which is now one of the very best values in Napa Valley. More recently, the Blankiets have introduced a pure Cabernet Sauvignon, Mythicus. Every visit to Blankiet Estate is proof of the total obsession to detail that is the rule here. The 2012s are radiant and expressive, which is the style of the year, but I was also quite surprised by just how finessed the 2013s are now given that so many wines in this vintage are so structured and tannic. These are magnificent wines from the Blankiets and the husband and wife winemaking team of Denis and May-Britt Malbec. Blankiet fans will find much to admire in these current and upcoming releases. The 2012s continue to develop positively in bottle, while the 2013s capture the utter profoundness of this great Napa Valley vintage. But it is the 2014s that could turn out to be the most surprising wines in the three vintages spanning 2012-2014, as they exude brisk energy, striking aromatics and fabulous overall energy. Comparing the 2013s and 2014s here will be a fascinating exercise for many years to come. Proprietors Claude and Katherine Blankiet spare no expense to put only the very best in the bottle, while winemakers Denis and May-Britt Malbec continue to refine their approach to getting the most out of these pristine hillside vineyards. The flagship Proprietary Red and new 100% Cabernet Sauvignon Mythicus will get most of the attention, but readers should also take a look at the Prince of Hearts, which is one of Napa Valley’s very finest values in artisan, world-class wine.

Vinous (May 2024) Review of 2012 Prince of Hearts, Paradise Hills Vineyard

The 2012 Prince of Hearts is fabulous, especially within its peer group. Bright, fresh, and vibrant, the 2012 is a real eye-opener in terms of what Blankiet put in the bottle for what was their entry level offering. The purity of fruit is remarkable. Bright red cherry, kirsch, rose petal and blood orange linger.

Vinous (May 2024) Review of Mythicus 2012, Paradise Hills Vineyard

Drinking window: 2024 – 2044

The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Mythicvs, Paradise Hills Vineyard has gained the most with time in bottle. Impenetrable and brooding at the outset, the 2012 has developed into a wine of sublime elegance. Dark red cherry, plum, rose petal, spice and mint all flesh out with some air. Seamless and yet potent, the 2012 is so well balanced. The tannins have really softened, more than I thought possible at the outset. This is Blankiet and their late winemaker, the brilliant Denis Malbec, at their best.

International Wine Report (Jan. 2024) Review of 2020 Prince of Music, Paradise Hills Vineyard

The 2020 ‘Prince of Music’ is a total success in this vintage. It instantly impresses with aromatics of ripe blackberries, blueberries, savory herbs, gravel, violets, and traces of mocha. The palate is just as impressive, offering a gorgeous full body impeccably structured with beautifully polished tannins, resulting in a lovely round texture that builds up to the velvety finish. This is simply delicious today, but also has the potential to hold up nicely for well over a decade.

Juha Linthonen (Feb 2024) Review of 2021 Proprietary Red, Paradise Hills Vineyard

“Intense dark ruby red color. It has an elegant and refined nose with ripe brambles, dark chocolate, and a touch of violet notes. The full-bodied palate is rich and vibrant with satin-like tannins and harmoniously balanced ripe dark fruits. The lingering long finish is delicate and spicy with dark cocoa flavors. A beautiful wine which is surprisingly already approachable but will peak in 2028-2032.”

Jeb Dunnuck Report (Dec. 2023) Review of 2021 Prince of Music, Paradise Hills Vineyard

Reader’s will love the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Prince of Music, which is up there with some of the best values in Napa Valley. Mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, but includes some Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Merlot. Notes of blackcurrants, savory cherries, iron, tobacco, and chocolate all define its aromatics, and it’s medium to full-bodied, with a plump, layered mouthfeel and a great finish.

Jeb Dunnuck Report (Dec. 2023) Review of 2021 Proprietary Red, Paradise Hills Vineyard

Based on 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Proprietary Red is absolutely stunning with its iron-laced darker fruits as well as nuances of chocolaty herbs, graphite, and leafy tobacco. Rich and full-bodied, it has a dense, concentrated mid-palate and ripe yet focused tannins that lend precision and length to the finish. It’s a stunning example of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon that will have 25+ years of overall longevity.

Jeb Dunnuck Report (Dec. 2023) Review of 2021 Mythicvs, Paradise Hills Vineyard

A tiny barrel selection of the best Cabernet in the vintage, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Mythicvs sports a dense plum hue as well as incredible aromatics of blackcurrants, black olive tapenade, iron, smoked tobacco, and camphor. It’s a big, rich, mouth-filling wine offering moderate acidity, ripe, layered tannins, stunning mid-palate depth, and a great finish. It needs 3-4 years of bottle age (or lots of air if drinking any time soon), but it’s a magical Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon in the making.

Jeb Dunnuck Report (Dec. 2023) Review of 2021 Prince of Hearts Red, Paradise Hills Vineyard

The 2021 Prince of Hearts Red is a more diverse blend and includes 47.4% of Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and the rest Petit Verdot. Ripe black cherries, currants, tobacco, spring flowers, and a beautiful sense of damp earth and minerality, define the aromatics. (it reminds me of a great Saint-Emilion), and this beauty hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a pure, layered, focused mouthfeel, and a great finish. There is nothing over the top or out of place, and it shows the classic, focused, structured style of this great vintage beautifully. Hide bottles for 4 – 5 years if you can and enjoy over the following two decades. It is a gorgeous wine from this team.

Jeb Dunnuck Report (Dec. 2023) Review of 2021 Rive Droite, Paradise Hills Vineyard

Reminding me of a great Saint-Emilion with its notes of darker cherry, white truffle, spring flowers, and chalky minerality. The 2021 Merlot Rive Droite hits the palate with full-bodied richness that carries a terrific sense of freshness, ripe, polished tannins, and a great, great finish. If there is a better expression of Merlot from Napa, I am unaware of it. This awesome wine will evolve for 20 – 25 years if well stored.

Vinous (Dec. 2023) Review of 2021 Rive Droite, Paradise Hills Vineyard

The 2021 Rive Droite Paradise Hills Vineyard marries vertical intensity and elegance to a degree I have not seen before. Red cherry fruit, kirsch orange peel, spice, mint, rose petal and a kiss of French oak are all beautifully delineated in the glass. Subtle, nuanced and wonderfully vibrant, the 2021 is just sublime. The Merlot-based Rive Droite offers a bit more sensuality and early appeal than the Cabernet Sauvignon-based offerings in this range. Some readers may prefer it to those wines – I certainly would not argue with that view!

Blankiet was one of the highlights of my time in Napa Valley this fall. The 2021s are simply mind-blowing. Proprietors Katherine and Claude Blankiet richly deserve all the acclaim they will surely receive for these wines. The Blankiets have put in the time and money to realize their ambition of producing world-class wines. Along the way, they have made the mistakes that are typical of all new ventures but have always done what was needed to address those issues.

Winemaker Graeme MacDonald found a finely tuned machine when he took over for Denis and May-Britt Malbec and had the skill to make the necessary adjustments to reach the next level without drastically changing the wines. Yields were down about 15% in 2021. MacDonald gave the wines 40-50 days on the skins, which worked well.

I tasted the 2021s twice, once at the winery and a second time at home in New York, just to make sure I had not been overly seduced by the magic of Napa Valley during the fall. The wines were nothing short of thrilling on both occasions. This is the vintage that places Blankiet squarely among the most elite wineries in Napa Valley. Bravo!

Vinous (Dec. 2023) Review of 2021 Proprietary Red, Paradise Hills Vineyard

The 2021 Proprietary Red Paradise Hills Vineyard is a mind-blowing, captivating wine. Black cherry, herbs, new leather, licorice, and spice all build as the 2021 fleshes out with time in the glass. All the elements are so well balanced. Floral accents and bright acids lend notable freshness throughout. A wine of persistence and energy more than of volume, the 2021 is all crystalline purity.

The 2021 Prince of Music is a gorgeous entry-level offering from Blankiet. Supple and racy, with beautifully forward fruit, the 2021 is seriously impressive, not to mention incredibly delicious. Soft contours and lifted floral accents lend freshness and verve to this mid-weight, saline-tinged Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend. What a delight!

Vinous (Dec., 2023) Review of 2021 Prince of Hearts Red, Paradise Hills Vineyard

BLANKIET ESTATE Prince of Hearts Red Wine 2021
Paradise Hills Vineyard, Yountville, California

The 2021 Prince of Hearts is such a classy wine. Dark cherry, leather, licorice, spice and mocha are nicely amplified in a wine that has so much to offer. All the elements are so well balanced in this deep, layered Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot-based blend. This is so impressive. The 2021 has the forward fruit to be quite approachable, but also a good deal of supporting structure. It’s a pretty big step up from prior releases.

Vinous (Dec. 2023) Review of Mythicus 2021, Paradise Hills Vineyard

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Mythicvs Paradise Hills Vineyard shows more textural opulence than the Proprietary Red (also Cabernet Sauvignon) and also a touch more oak imprint, but the two wines are differentiated more by style than quality. Silky, beautifully ripe tannins, frames hints of blue fruit, orange peel, mocha, mint, spice, incense and tobacco. I wouldn’t dream of touching a bottle anytime soon. In a word: Unforgettable!

International Wine Report (Sep. 2023) Review of 2021 Prince of Hearts Red, Paradise Hills Vineyard

The 2021 ‘Prince of Hearts’ is another outstanding wine from Blankiet and the most accessible wine in the lineup. Composed mainly of Cabernet Sauvignon (47%) and Merlot (40%), along with Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot finishing off the blend. It is a simply gorgeous wine laced with inviting aromas of ripe dark currants and dark plums woven together with florals, graphite, and hints of sweet exotic spices, all taking shape in the glass. This is full-bodied and velvety on the palate, with a lovely finessed texture and nicely integrated tannins. It displays excellent overall balance, with layers of sweetly ripened dark fruits and sweet spice flavors that flow effortlessly through the seamless finish. This is a fantastic wine from Blankiet to approach upon release, but it should also offer a drinking window that spans well beyond a decade.

International Wine Report (Sep. 2023) Review of 2022 Prince of Hearts Rosé, Paradise Hills Vineyard

The 2022 ‘Prince of Hearts Rosé’ from Blankiet is nothing short of brilliant. This 100% Merlot Rosé impresses the second the cork is pulled as it releases stunning aromas of white cherries, strawberries, honeydew melon, and hints of lightly sweet toasted oak that all come together brilliantly. The palate is just as impressive as it possesses a gorgeous, richly textured mouthfeel and remarkable overall balance. Beautiful, sweet red fruits and melon flavors emerge from its core and continue to leave a lasting impression on the delicious finish. Year after year, this is one of the most impressive bottles of Rosé wines to be found, and there is no exception in this vintage. It may be the finest vintage yet for the Prince of Hearts Rosé.

International Wine Report (Sep. 2023) Review of 2021 Rive Droit, Paradise Hills Vineyard

The 2021 ‘Rive Droite’ is composed of 96% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc, and it is a gorgeous wine from Blankiet in this vintage. It is all about elegance and refinement as it impresses with its pretty aromatic profile of fresh red and dark fruits along with tobacco, fresh flowers, herbs and wet stones that all emerge beautifully from the glass. Displaying wonderful elegance and incredible poise and balance, this medium-to full-bodied red is bright, fresh, and well-defined, ending with a refined, focused finish. While the 2021 ‘Rive Droite’ is undoubtedly a beautiful young wine, collectors will want to tuck this one away for several years, as it has the potential to age tremendously well for quite some time and will certainly become more compelling over time.

International Wine Report (Sep. 2023) Review of 2021 Prince of Music, Paradise Hills Vineyard

The 2021 ‘Prince of Music’ is nothing short of spectacular in this vintage. Composed predominately of Cabernet Sauvignon (89.7%) with the remainder of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and a touch of Merlot. It instantly impresses with its stunning aromas of black currants, black cherries, spices, graphite, tobacco, floral and crushed gravel, which all come together in perfect harmony. On the palate this possesses a gorgeous full body that is well-structured with beautifully polished tannins. It also shows wonderful overall balance, concentration and poise as it continues to deliver gorgeous ripe dark fruit, tobacco and spice flavors that all build through the precise finish. The ‘Prince of Music’ is simply fabulous today and should also age remarkably well for years to come.

International Wine Report (Sep. 2023) Review of 2021 Mythicvs, Paradise Hills Vineyard

The 2021 ‘Mythicvs’ Cabernet Sauvignon needs little introduction. It is the crown jewel from Blankiet and one of the finest wines from the entire region. Composed from selected barrels of Cabernet Sauvignon from the best lots, this wine has it all. It reveals its incredibly perfumed aromatics of ripe dark currants and black cherries, woven with fresh violets, graphite shavings, exotic spices, tobacco, herbs, and crushed gravel that all come together and burst from the glass. International Wine Report (Sep. 2023) Review of 2021 Proprietary Red, Paradise Hills Vineyard

The 2021 Paradise Hills Proprietary Red from Blankiet is a masterful wine in this vintage. It displays incredible purity, refinement, and elegance while maintaining a wonderful concentration. It opens slowly to beautiful aromas of ripe dark currants, spiced dark plums, graphite shavings, sweet pipe tobacco, and spring florals, which all develop with time in the glass. It impresses with its wonderful balance as bright acidity underlines the beautiful ripe fruit, accentuating the long, pretty finish. Vinous (Apr. 2023) Review of 2001 Proprietary Red, Paradise Hills Vineyard

Helen Turley turned out a brilliant 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon for proprietors Claude and Katherine Blankiet. The 2001 is a wine of its era, there is no doubt about it, and yet it shows just how compelling the best wines of this period remain in a word: brilliant.

“The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Paradise Hills Vineyard was one of the highlights of my tasting for this retrospective. Dark, plush, and inky to the core, the 2001 possesses tremendous explosive intensity. Blue/purplish fruit, iron, leather, cedar, spice, chocolate and heavy torrefaction abound. Helen Turley made the 2001, a blend of 90% Blocks 7 and 8 (planted in 1998) and 10% Block (planted in 1996). The wine very much reflects her style and the prevailing approach at many Napa Valley properties at the time. It’s a towering wine that is in a great place today.”

Vinous (Oct. 2022) Review of 2020 Prince of Hearts, Paradise Hills Vineyard

The 2020 Prince of Hearts is the only wine that Claude & Katherine Blankiet bottled in 2020. It possesses quite a bit of depth and power, along with the distinctly ripe profile of a year marked by severe heat and drought before the fires became an issue. This is a good example of a wine smoke-affected, but not tainted. Because of the severe lack of sunlight, sugars ripened while phenolics stalled. As a result, the tannins are a bit severe. Even though, this is a very good wine.

Jeb Dunnuck Report (May 2022) Review of 2019 Rive Droite, Paradise Hills Vineyard

The 2019 Merlot Rive Droite is more broad and opulent, with a sexy, full-bodied profile loaded with notions of ripe black cherries, currants, loamy earth, chocolate, and hints of tobacco. I love its balance, it has great tannins, and one heck of a finish. I’m not sure it matches the otherworldly 2018 Rive Droite, but it’s possibly the finest Merlot in the vintage. This cuvée comes from 98% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, from more red clay soils of the Mayacamas mountains, and spent 18 months in 80% new oak. 286 cases.

Jeb Dunnuck Report (May 2022) Review of 2019 Proprietary Red, Paradise Hills Vineyard

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Blankiet Estate Proprietary Red is straight-up incredible, with medium to full-bodied aromas and flavors of cassis, graphite, lead pencil shavings, and tobacco leaf. It reminds me of a great vintage of Château Lafite with its elegance and purity, and it builds slowly on the palate, with ripe tannins, a seamless mouthfeel, and a great finish. It’s not massive by any means but is just pure class. It should have 30 years of longevity. The blend is 83.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and the balance Petit Verdot that saw 80% new French oak.

Jeb Dunnuck Report (May 2022) Review of 2019 Prince of Music Red, Paradise Hills Vineyard

The entry level wine of this reference point estate, the 2019 Red Blend Prince of Music checks in as 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc and the rest Merlot and Petit Verdot. It’s a pure balanced, wonderfully textured and medium to full bodied beauty that represents a smoking value. Offering lots of darker berry fruits, tobacco, graphite, and crushed stone-like notes, it should be snatched up by savvy readers. 800 cases.

Jeb Dunnuck Report (May 2022) Review of 2019 Prince of Hearts Red, Paradise Hills Vineyard

Lastly, the 2019 Red Blend Prince of Hearts is another fresh, elegant, wonderfully pure beauty from this team. A blend of 51% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc and the rest Petit Verdot, it offers a spicy, leafy herb, darker cherry, and currant-driven bouquet, medium to full body, ripe polished tannins, and a great finish. It’s one classy, elegant red blend to enjoy over the coming 15 years or so.

Jeb Dunnuck Report (May 2022) Review of 2019 Mythicvs, Paradise Hills Vineyard

Pure gold. The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Mythicvs checks in as pure Cabernet Sauvignon coming from three separate vineyards. It has that incredible profile of power without weight that’s so hard to find, and again, it has a Lafite-like elegance and class in its aromatics as well as on the palate. Blackcurrants, smoked tobacco, loamy earth, freshly sharpened pencils, and graphite all define the bouquet, and it’s full-bodied, with incredible tannins and a broad yet seamless, pure, and precise mouthfeel. It hits 14.5% natural alcohol, the pH is 3.85, and it spent 18 months in new T5 barrels from Taransaud. This wine absolutely stopped me in my tracks. There are just 175 cases produced, but it’s a legendary Yountville Cabernet Sauvignon that I suspect will have 30+ years of prime drinking.

International Wine Report (Jan. 2022) Review of 2020 Prince of Hearts Rosé, Paradise Hills Vineyard

The Prince of Hearts Rosé is an absolute knockout in 2020. This is 100% Merlot from the Paradise Hills Vineyard, and it is simply stunning. It opens with a seductive and complex profile of ripe strawberries, rhubarb, and cherry, with hints of citrus, buttered almonds, and wild herbs that all burst from the glass. On the palate, it displays a gorgeous textured mouthfeel, along with remarkable purity. This goes on to impress with its wonderful balance and poise which gives way to layers of beautiful ripe red berries, juicy melon and lively citrus that lingers effortlessly on the finish. International Wine Report (Jan. 2022) Review of 2019 Proprietary Red, Paradise Hills Vineyard

The 2019 Paradise Hills Proprietary Red is a thing of beauty. A cellar worthy wine, which immediately begins to impress with its perfumed aromatics of ripe dark currants and black cherries, that are woven together with pencil shavings, exotic spices, fresh dark florals, herbs, tobacco and mineral nuances that all come together and burst from the glass. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied with absolutely incredible overall balance and structure. This stunning red goes on to impress with its wonderful concentration, precision and beautifully pure ripe dark fruits that continue to captivate the senses as they build up to the gorgeous finish. The 2019 is a masterful display of both elegance and precision, and it should go on to age brilliantly for many years to come.

International Wine Report (Jan. 2022) Review of 2019 Prince of Hearts Red, Paradise Hills Vineyard

The 2019 Prince of Hearts Red is composed primarily of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, along with a touch of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wine instantly impresses as it releases its inviting aromas of blueberries and plums, which come together with Sumatran coffee, sweet spices, tobacco, herbs and loamy notes that all explode from the glass. On the palate this is full-bodied and beautifully polished, with a plush texture that gives way to delicious flavors of ripe dark/red fruits, spices and roasted coffee that expand through the supple finish. The Prince of Hearts is already showing incredibly well upon release, however it should become even more compelling over the course of the next decade.

International Wine Report (Jan. 2022) Review of 2019 Rive Droit, Paradise Hills Vineyard

The 2019 ‘Rive Droite’ is a simply magical wine from Blankiet in this vintage and one of the most impressive Merlot wines you will come across. Composed of 98% Merlot and a remaining dash of Cabernet Franc, it offers incredibly perfumed aromas of blackberries, blueberries, and currants, laced with crushed gravel, pencil shavings, herbs, and hints of tobacco all taking shape in the glass. It is just as impressive on the palate, showing a beautifully balanced, full- bodied texture with gorgeously polished tannins resulting in an exceptional mouthfeel. International Wine Report (Jan. 2022) Review of 2019 Mythicvs, Paradise Hills Vineyard

The 2019 ‘Mythicvs’ is an absolute masterpiece in this vintage. This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from the best blocks out of the Paradise Hills Vineyard and is amongst the most compelling wines I taste from Napa every year, the 2019 is no exception. As this begins to open in the glass, it releases incredibly perfumed aromatics of ripe dark currants, blueberries, and black cherries, that are laced together with graphite pencil shavings, exotic spices, charcoal, fresh dark florals, herbs, tobacco, and crushed gravel nuances that all come together beautifully. On the palate, this is full- bodied and graceful, yet impeccably structured, with well-defined, polished tannins. This continues to impress with its wonderful overall concentration, precision, and beautiful pure ripe dark fruits that cascade through the long finish. This is a drop-dead gorgeous wine from Blankiet that is certainly impressive now but is destined for a brilliant future ahead.

International Wine Report (Jan. 2022) Review of 2019 Prince of Music, Paradise Hills Vineyard

The 2019 Prince of Music is a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2.5% Merlot, 5.9% Cabernet Franc and 1.6% Petit Verdot. This wine is open and expressive, offering bright, vivid aromas of dark cherries and blueberries, which come together with sweet spices, tobacco, herbs, and fresh violets, all accented with lovely toasted oak nuances. On the palate, this is full-bodied and opulent, with beautiful plush texture and mouthwatering flavors of ripe dark fruits that expand through the finish. While the Prince of Music is accessible and drinking beautifully right now, it should also offer a drinking window that spans at least a decade.

Jeb Dunnuck Report (Jan. 2021) Review of 2018 Proprietary Red, Paradise Hills Vineyard

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is based on 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, and the rest close to an even split of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. A more brooding, backward wine, it reveals a dense purple hue to go with primordial notes of black and blue fruits, graphite, crushed stone, smoked tobacco, and a hint of violets. As with all these latest releases from Blankiet, the purity is just about off the charts, it’s flawlessly balanced, and has ample structure as well as a great finish. This magical Cabernet is desperately in need of 4 – 6 years, if not a decade of bottle age, but will be very long-lived.

Jeb Dunnuck Report (Jan. 2021) Review of 2018 Rive Droite, Paradise Hills Vineyard

The 2018 Merlot Rive Droite is another powerhouse in the lineup that has both richness and elegance in spades. Gorgeous black cherries, currants, tobacco leaves, chocolate, chalky minerality, and cedar pencil notes give way to a full-bodied, seamless red with polished tannins, remarkable purity, and a great, great finish. A killer Merlot-dominated blend that flirts with perfection, enjoy bottles any time over the coming 15 – 20 years. The blend is 96.1% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc. Hello, Gorgeous!

Jeb Dunnuck Report (Jan. 2021) Review of 2018 Prince of Hearts Red, Paradise Hills Vineyard

Checking in as an even split of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with 1% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, the 2018 Prince of Hearts offers a stunning, Bordeaux-like nose of red and black currants, new leather, lead pencil, graphite, and bouquet garni. With medium to full-bodied richness, a seamless, elegant texture, classy background oak, and a great finish, this head turner has plenty of richness, yet it is the balance, purity, and texture that keep you coming back to the glass. Bravo!

Jeb Dunnuck Report (Jan. 2021) Review of 2018 Mythicvs, Paradise Hills Vineyard

Lastly, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Mythicvs (100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Paradise Hills Vineyard in Yountville) can be thought of as the flagship cuvée. As with the Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, it is built for the long haul, offering unevolved notes of blackcurrants, cassis, charcoal, graphite, burning embers, violets, and camphor. Reminding me of the 2010 Pontet Canet on release, it is full-bodied, concentrated, and powerful, with building structure, flawless balance, and a great finish. Do not even think about opening a bottle for at least 7 – 8 years.

The palate is medium-plus bodied, with gorgeous velvety tannins and lovely overall finesse and balance through the finish. The 2018 Rive Droite is a spectacular wine from Blankiet Estate that displays a stunning combination of power and refinement. This Right Bank inspired blend slowly unwinds in the glass, releasing wonderful aromatics of ripe blackberries, black cherries, and hints of blueberries, which are accented by crushed florals, tobacco, and wet gravel. This possesses a gorgeous full body that is beautifully structured with polished tannins that provide excellent support. This displays remarkable definition and poise ending with an incredible long finish. While this is already gorgeous in its youth, it should ultimately become even more compelling after a few more years of bottle age.

Vinous (Jan. 2021) Review of 2018 Rive Droite, Paradise Hills Vineyard

The 2018 Rive Droite Paradise Hills Vineyard is a wine of pure and total sensuality. Blood orange, raspberry jam, mint, white pepper, and cinnamon are some of the many notes that lift from the glass. It is another wine in this range marked by bright acids and veins of salinity that confer energy. The Merlot emerges from mostly from parcels close to the entrance of the estate that are shaded and relatively cool. It is the most reserved of the three flagship wines. Dark red plum, blood orange, mint and sweet spice leave behind the closing shades of nuance.

Vinous (Jan. 2021) Review of 2018 Proprietary Red, Paradise Hills Vineyard

The 2018 Proprietary Red Paradise Hills Vineyard is super elegant and refined. A wine of extraordinary pedigree and nuance, the 2018 is class through and through. Bright acids perk up the dark red berry fruit, spice, and floral notes. In 2018, the Proprietary Red stands out for its exquisite balance and class. Everything about the Prop Red speaks to finesse: the aromatics, fruit and tannin. Bright, salivating acids continue to emerge with time in the glass. Readers who open the 2018 young will want to give it a few hours of air. What a wine!

Vinous (Jan. 2021) Review of 2018 Prince of Hearts Red, Paradise Hills Vineyard

The 2018 Prince of Hearts is dark, sensual, and inviting. Merlot plays the leading role in the 2018, giving the wine striking depth, texture, and resonance. Dark cherry, mocha, spice, and new leather all flesh out in this pliant, super-expressive wine. All the elements are so impeccably balanced. The vintage was generous and there was too much Merlot for the flagship wines, so most of it went into the Prince of Hearts. The 2018 is a fabulous edition.

Vinous (Jan. 2021) Review of Mythicus 2018, Paradise Hills Vineyard

Blankiet’s 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Mythicus Paradise Hills Vineyard is magnificent. Inky, deep, and soaring in its intensity. Mythicus is a blend taken mostly from well-exposed parcels in Blocks 1, 6, 7 and 8, which feature variations on volcanic ash soils that are starkly delineated in the separate components. The Mythicus is one of the most tightly wound wines of 2018, but in the very-best way. It will be absolutely thrilling in another few years’ time once the tannins soften further. Purplish black fruit, gravel, spice, menthol, licorice, and dried herbs linger on the intense finish.

Jeb Dunnuck Report (Jan. 2020) Review of 2017 Proprietary Red, Paradise Hills Vineyard

Coming all from Yountville and 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, and 5% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, the 2017 Proprietary Red Paradise Hills Vineyard ranks with the top wines of the vintage and offers extraordinary notes of crème de cassis, crushed violets, tobacco leaf, damp earth, and lead pencil shavings. These all carry to an elegant, seamless yet full-bodied and powerful red that has seamless tannins, flawless balance, good acidity, and a big finish. This is about as good as 2017 gets. It’s going to benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age and keep for 25+ years. As always, these releases from Blankiet rely on elegance and finesse just as much as overt power and richness.

Jeb Dunnuck Report (Jan. 2020) Review of 2017 Prince of Hearts Red, Paradise Hills Vineyard

The Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Prince of Hearts Red Paradise Hills Vineyard is another juicy, delicious wine from this estate, and at the price, it certainly represents value. Giving up plenty of black fruits, smoked earth, chocolate, and leafy herbs as well as a hint of new leather, it hits the palate with beautiful purity of fruit, medium to full body, nicely integrated acidity, and a clean, classy style that’s going to drink beautifully for 10–15 years.

Jeb Dunnuck Report (Jan. 2020) Review of 2017 Rive Droite, Paradise Hills Vineyard

The Merlot-dominated 2017 Merlot Rive Droite Paradise Hills Vineyard (there’s 4% Cabernet Franc in the blend) is also straight-up brilliant, showing tons of ripe black cherry, chocolate, coffee bean, and truffly herb aromas and flavors. Full-bodied and powerful, it has the same elegant tannin structure found in the Proprietary Red, nicely integrated acidity, terrific purity, and a great finish. It’s not for those looking for massive richness and decadence, but it has a purity, elegance, and minerality that makes it a joy to drink.

Vinous (Jan. 2020) Review of 2017 Prince of Hearts Red, Paradise Hills Vineyard

Blankiet’s entry-level Prince of Hearts is gorgeous in 2017. Silky, perfumed and light on its feet, Prince of Hearts is a wine of understatement and nuance more than anything else. Sweet floral and spice notes add brightness and lift to a core of sweet red berry fruit. I would prefer to drink it over the next decade or so.

International Wine Report (Jan. 2020) Review of 2017 Prince of Hearts Rosé, Paradise Hills Vineyard

The 2017 ‘Prince of Hearts’ is a gorgeous wine from Blankiet. In 2017 Claude Blankiet and his winemaking team decided to include six barrels fruit which is normally designated for the Estate Proprietary Red into the Prince of Hearts, and the result is wonderful. This instantly opens to striking aromatics of fresh ripe dark currants and dark cherries, which are woven together with spring florals, graphite, dusty loam, tobacco, spices and a touch a touch of licorice all developing beautifully in the glass. On the palate, this is just as impressive, as it possesses a gorgeous textured mouthfeel and a wonderful seamless quality. This goes on to show remarkable overall balance, precision and finesse, with a core of beautiful sweet ripe fruits that expand gracefully through the finish. This is a sensational wine from Blankiet which is already showing beautifully today, however that being said, it could also offer a drinking window that spans two decades.

Vinous (Jan. 2020) Review of 2017 Rive Droite, Paradise Hills Vineyard

The 2017 Rive Droite Paradise Hills Vineyard is dense, plush and super-expressive; the juiciness of Merlot comes through nicely here. Black cherry, chocolate, licorice, menthol and gravel are front and center. A dollop of Cabernet Franc adds lovely savouriness and aromatic nuance. This is such a pretty and layered wine with tons of near- and medium-term appeal. Overall, the 2017 is a bit smaller scaled in build than normal, but it is a big success for a vintage that was especially challenging for Merlot.

International Wine Report (Jan. 2020) Review of 2017 Rive Droite, Paradise Hills Vineyard

The 2017 ‘Rive Droite’ is Blankiet’s Right-Bank inspired wine which is composed predominately of Merlot sourced from their Paradise Hills Vineyard. The Merlot was harvested in late August to early September, just before the seasons last heat spike which lasted ten days. As far as the wine itself, it is simply gorgeous, showing remarkable restraint and poise. It offers lovely aromatics of dark cherries and red currants which come together with spices, spring flowers, herbs and tobacco nuances which lift beautifully from the glass. On the palate it is medium-bodied and impeccably balanced, with a well-defined structure that supports the lavish mouthfeel. Classy and sophisticated, this is an utterly compelling wine from Blankiet in 2017 and while it is already captivating in its youth, the best is yet to come for this fabulous wine.
